2010 Peking to Paris Rally

Peking to Paris car rally in a Model A

Fritz and Lang phoned in from the docks this morning where they were patiently waiting for the ferry that would carry them from Greece to Italy.  Lang said the trip to the docks was exciting considering it was raining and they were down a windshield wiper (this time on the navigator’s side).

Both were in good spirits despite the drizzle.  “The car’s held up perfectly!” said Fritz going into a list of the minor issues including a few cracks in the frame, and the metal around the windshield, slight oil leak and cracked radiator.  Amazingly they haven’t had to change a tire through this entire trip (hopefully I didn’t just jinx them).  Their friends Lloyd Dahmen and Charles Schwager in the 1949 Cadi haven’t been so lucky.  They’ve had something like 18 flats.  Of course their car is much heavier than the Model A.

Lang spent some of their down time this morning tightening bolts on the car.  Fritz grabbed his camera and went to shoot photos of the other cars in the rally.  “The cars have such character!  They’re all beat up and muddy with things strapped to them.  They’ll make great pictures.”  Apparently Fritz and Lang have something like 2000 photos from the rally!  (Stay tuned!  We’ll get some new stories and photos posted once they’re home.)

They ferry was scheduled to depart at 7:00 and they expected to arrive in Ancona Italy around 10:00 the next day.

Only four more days of driving left.  Fritz and Lang are both having the time of their lives and are sorry to see it end.

Here’s a picture of their accommodations on the ferry.
