Day 35 Thurday 14th Oct – Viareggio to Aix les Bains (France) 607km

Posted by Mission Control On October - 14 - 2010

This was the first day since we left Beijing that we could stop and relax for a while during the day. It felt pretty good.

Amazing weather at the top of the pass. Henry made the climb with no problems. He is leaking a little oil and drinking about a liter of water every day, but that is ok because so are his passengers.

Tomorrow we have a time trial on a race track. That will be interesting. We haven’t told Henry yet. Yeah, we have started to talk to the car! Sad but true.

Two days left – probably a good thing!! :)

Fritz and Lang, I became interested in following your trip after reading the article in the DM Register in August. I have followed your most amazing adventure regularly, as well as following the website of Simon and Rupert in Car 23 and the official race comments by Syd. It has been an interesting blend of commentary, adventures, and pictures. I followed the riders through Mongolia and other countries, read of the constant repairs needed by many of these old cars, learned about countries I never heard of and still probably can’t pronounce, and marveled at how the riders were received in many of the countries they traveled through. I laughed at the antics and unique hats and outfits acquired by Simon and Rupert, as well as their commentary on customs in various locations. I particularly appreciated the picture you posted of the building that looks like an open book in a country where there is little free speech. Your car was amazing — it appeared it ran pretty consistently through the race. This has not only been a wonderful adventure for both of you, but for those of us have followed you as well. I feel that I have been right along with you on the ride from Peking to Paris. I hope you will post some of your 2,000 pictures to this website when you return as well as sharing your adventures with the people of Iowa.
Congratulations #19 on a successful journey!!!
