One thing about intense travel is that you lose all track of the day, the date and where you have been. The 10 – 12 hours of driving takes so much concentration that your brain focuses on that and that alone. I do know that it is Monday and we have traveled 4500 km on some of the most demanding roads in the world. We are so fortunate to be able to see this vast Mongolia as unspoiled as it is. Favorite day?
It could be today – driving thru the small villages from Troyes to Paris – narrow roads and beautifully prepared crop land – green and yellow fields of winter wheat. The roads were not much wider than the car so driving took every bit of attention to keep us safe. So today was a favorite! My true favorite was Mongolia – camping on green steppes that contrasted with the vast and beautiful desert. Day 12 Tuesday 21st Sept – Khovd to Border (Mongolia) – 311 km
Still no official word from Fritz or Lang, but rumor has it that they’ve finally encountered some technical difficulties and have begun the search for a new Mitchell Gearbox. The issue seems fairly minor as they are able to continue driving without any creative Macgyvering (many of the other drivers have had to rig parts with bits of sardine or soda cans, cigarette wrapping foil, etc). Day 10 Sunday 19th Sept – Teel River to Khovd (Mongolia) – 177 km
Fritz and Lang made up for yesterday in the standings and vaulted ahead two places to numero 44! Today’s time was 6 hours, 7 minutes and 6 seconds. Their total time thus far is 87 hours, 11 minutes and 48 seconds.
