It’s been a crazy day here at Mission Control!  It all started with the following email  and picture from Lang. Today started with an Italian traffic jam on the Autostrada.   Well, here we are in Italy.  The ferry was a couple hours late and it is raining cats and dogs. And oh yes, there is an accident on the autostrade that has us stopped! Just got off the phone with Fritz.  It’s 1am in Belokurikha Russia and they’ve just arrived at their hotel and gotten settled.  “First shower in 4 days! Been wearing the same clothes and underwear for four days in Mongolia!”  Fritz shared for his daughters benefit/amusement. The Gobi desert was all scenic views and tough roads.  “We made it!”, Fritz continued.  “I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.  Just amazing!”  He went on... (more...)

First Contact!!!!  Fritz and Lang called this morning and I’m pleased to share that they are alive and well – closing out Monday and ready for Tuesday’s rest day.  Fritz told me that they drove 460 km today and ended having dinner with the other 250 people participating in the event.  They have had some ”fantastic days”, and have enjoyed amazing camaraderie, people and cultures.  The driving has been hard, but the car’s holding up well.  The majority... (more...)

Navigating through Beijing

  Big day today. We picked our car up at a warehouse near the docks. Our car started up on the very first crank! Using trip notes called Tulips¹ we navigated about 23 miles in one of the world’s busiest cities back to our hotel. Drivers along the way were honking, taking photos and waving all the way. Pretty amazing. Our 15 minutes of fame in Beijing. We missed the last turn and had to turn around and find our way back. Not a good scenario believe me.
