No official word from Fritz or Lang, but I assume they escaped the sanatorium without incident this morning for an early start to Ashgabad.  Today’s official report mentions interesting architecture of Ashgabad including a building shaped like a book (right up our alley!).  This building was built in 2006 to house the country’s press core.  I suspect the building’s tenents may have changed over the years (the rally reports refer to it as the National Library).  Just from... (more...)

Day 23 Saturday 2nd Oct – Samarkand to Turkmenabat (Turkmenistan) 369km

The infamous Uzbekistan - Turkmenistan border crossing. (Thanks to Charles Schwager, No. 86, for the photo.) This morning was the long border crossing from Uzbekistan into Turkmenistan.  The first car to leave Samarkand for the border left at 3:30 am with most following between 5:30 and 6:00.  Only word from Lang and Fritz today is a quick – “All’s well” via email.  I’m sure they’ll have more to share in the coming days.  They were among the 17 teams who stayed... (more...)
